Pinang Peranakan Mansion

This personal series of images studies the Peranakan Mansion located in historic district of Georgetown, Penang. Originally built at the end of the nineteenth century as the Hai Kee Chan or Sea Remembrance Store, it today hosts artefacts and objects that reflect the life of Peranakan Babas or Nyonyas. The Peranakans were a prominent community of acculturated Chinese who settled in the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore. Their exotic sense of taste is reflected in the fitout of the mansion, which incorporates Chinese carved-wood panels, English floor tiles and Scottish ironmongery.
