Kolumba Museum Cologne - Peter Zumthor
Kolumba Museum is located in Cologne and houses an art gallery under the curatorship of the city’s Archdiocese. The new building designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was completed in 2007 and is constructed above the ruins of the Saint Columba church.
The exterior is characterized by an intricate use of masonry using custom-made bricks. The monolithic volumetry that houses the galleries contains simple rectilinear windows which in the interior act as frames offering views onto the surroundings. The austere palette of materials is embued at key moments with richer tones such as walnut panelling in the reading room. This personal series documented the building in 2009.
