Dispatch: Shanghai

Dispatch: Shanghai is the working title of an ongoing photography series by Aksel Coruh which investigates the contemporary nature of the city. Part street photography, part documentary, it covers a variety of subjects: residential life in a Putuo slum, the detachment of commuters using the metropolitan subway, moments of retroactive beauty stolen from the former French Concession, and the social isolation of late-night labourers in Jing'an.

Dispatch: Shanghai is the working title of an ongoing series which investigates the contemporary nature of the city. Part street photography, part documentary, it covers a variety of subjects: residential life in a Putuo slum, the detachment of commuters using the subway, moments of retroactive beauty stolen from the former French Concession, and the social isolation of late-night labourers in Jing'an. Conceited, blurred, indifferent, sentimental, affected: the idiosyncratic nature of the city and paradoxical rise and fall of its neighbourhoods and inhabitants in the face of modernity form the guiding thread to the images.
